Laura & Shane

We Did It!

5am Start!

All weather terrains!
Rain, wind, sun and even a rainbow! 🌈

42km - 8hours!

We had so many people join us along the way, cheer us on and help us cross the finish line!

Thankyou! Thankyou! Thankyou!

3 Days to Go!!!

3 DAYS TO GO!! ✅✅

We’re ready to roll!
Just now hoping the weather gods are kind to us! 🌞

Thankyou! Thankyou! THANKYOU! To everyone that has donated! We are beyond grateful!

If you would like to join us on our walk on Sunday, here are some times/places that you could meet us (and the distance to the finish line);
💙 Glenrock Reserve (Gun Club Road) @ 9:30 (19.5km)
💙 Merewhether Surfhouse @ 11am (15km)
💙 Newcastle Surfhouse @ 12:15 (9.2km)
💙 Nobbys Beach Surfhouse @ 1:30 (3km)
💙 Customs House @ 3pm 🍻🍻

We are encouraging everyone to wear the colour TEAL - The colour of Dementia Australia - you’ll find all our walkers in Teal shirts!

One Week To Go!!!

We are super excited!

Final preparations are in place, getting all the gear we’ll need to get the 42kms done!

We are so grateful for everyone that has donated, sent messages, said they will join us on our walk, celebrated and encouraged our mission! We have felt all the love, and will definitely be using it as motivation to get the walk done!

Later this week, I’ll be posting times of where people can join us along the way.
Whether it’s for a long walk, a little walk, or a drink at the finish line, we’d love to see you there!!!

More to information to come!!

2 Weeks to Go!

The count down is well and truly on! With a little over two weeks to go, we’re starting to make sure everything is organised for a stress free stroll!

I’ll be posting estimate times at different locations later on next week so anyone can come and join us along the way! We’re going to need an extra push as we get closer to the end, and would love to see as many of you there (IN TEAL!! The colour of Dementia Australia) as possible!

This is our mission!

Map to come! But a bit of an outline!

Starting at the Fernleigh Track 5am (Belmont End) and weaving our way all the way to Nobbys Beach, with an “expected arrival” time of about 2:30pm!
We’ll be detouring past Lambton Park (Harker Oval), down Brunker Road, through the beautiful GlenRock Reserve, before hitting the pavement of Bathers Way! A quick detour along Hunter Street to help us reach our kms, before walking out along the breakwall and back to Nobbys Beach Clubhouse!!

It’s going to be a mission, but one we’re really excited about!
3 weeks to go!!

Our Why!

When I first approached Shane about completing this walk, we both had to take a deep breathe and think… “ohh that’s a challenge, that’ll be tough”.
But we quickly came back to our WHY? And ultimately, what was harder?
For us, watching our loved ones lose their ability to speak, to remember their own children/grandchildren, to lose their independence was (and will be) so much harder then us doing a long walk.

For me, my Nan was incredibly independent. She was fierce, loyal, stubborn and would just go about life in her own way. Ironically, Nan didn’t have a license throughout her entire life, meaning she walked everywhere. My mum told me the story of how she used to have to run to basketball training, train for two hours, then run home.
For me, I’ll be remembering Nan every step of this walk!
And I know Shane will be the same. We’re both looking forward to reminiscing along the way!

4 weeks to go!!

We’re making the impossible, possible, by taking part in Australia's Walk & Jog Challenge to raise much needed funds for dementia research.

Dementia is a cruel and unkind beast that effects so many.

For Shane and I, and all of our families, we had to experience this first hand.

Lester Whereat (31/1/1940 - 17/2/2024) was a kindhearted, warm, compassionate, caring, family orientated, a bit of a larrikin with a contagious nature. He adored his family, and always ensured that they knew how much they were loved.

Gloria Kannar (21/4/1935 - 30/3/2024) was fiercely independent, loving, loyal, sarcastic, strong-minded, driven. She was ever supportive of her family and ensured they all adopted the same tenacity in life that she displayed.

We’re taking part in Australia's Walk & Jog Challenge to raise much needed funds to support people impacted by dementia.

But we need your help! Please make a donation to support our efforts and help us to make the impossible, possible.

Our fundraising will help support the work of Dementia Australia Research Foundation, funding innovative Australian research into dementia causes, diagnosis, treatment and one day a cure.

Thank you for your support.
